Pat Mire Interviews Music Icon Kris Kristofferson
3 March 2010
Pat Mire and his New Orleans and Shreveport-based film crew recently filmed an interview with Kris Kristofferson for Pat’s upcoming documentary on Gerry McGee. Gerry was the lead guitarist for Kristofferson’s band from 1974-1978, and appeared on several of his albums. Gerry also appeared with Kristofferson in the films “A Star Is Born” and “Heaven’s Gate.” Gerry considers Kristofferson a poet of the highest caliber and one who gave him tremendous creative freedom during their time working together.
Kristofferson was in Bossier City, Louisiana to perform in concert with Merle Haggard. Lisa Meyers, Kristofferson’s wife, told Pat that Kris rarely grants interviews anymore and never grants interviews before a performance. However, Kristofferson generously agreed to make an exception for Gerry, whom he described as one of the best guitarists he has ever worked with. According to Kristofferson, “Gerry is a triple threat: he is not only a great guitarist, he is a great songwriter and a singer with a voice as soulful as Hank Williams or Ray Charles.” Kristofferson added, “I am tickled that his story is finally being told, and I can’t wait to see it when it is finished.”
“I was overwhelmed by Kris Kristofferson’s kindness and his words of praise for Gerry,” said Pat Mire. “He was totally charming and so very generous. I understand Gerry’s admiration for him.”
